What is a casa particular?

If you want to have a more in-depth experience interacting with native Cubans, I strongly recommend you stay in a casa particular instead of at a hotel.

A casa particular (plural casas particulares) is like a homestay or guesthouse, similar to a bed and breakfast. Usually, it is a private house or apartment run by a local family who register and pay special taxes to the Cuban government and costs between $30–50 per night for a double room with a private bathroom.

The merits of casas particulares are as follows:

  • You will have a chance to interact with local Cubans.
  • You can stay in a clean and cozy room in a convenient location for a reasonable price.
  • Depending on the casa, you can enjoy Cuban home cooking made with local food.
  • Some casas have hotel-like amenities, such as gardens, patios, minibars, bed-making services, and so on.
  • You may have a chance to smoke cigars or sip rum with the host family!

In Cuba, approximately half of the hotels are totally owned and operated by the Cuban government and run between $100–200. A quarter are structured as joint ventures between the government and foreign companies, and the remainder is owned by Cubans and managed by foreign hotel operators. The prices vary between $150–600. Most casas don’t have their own websites.

Airbnb is now operating in Cuba, so some casas are listed, and it is convenient to pay by credit card, or you can check a website like this one.

Many casas offer high standards of accommodations in a convenient location at an affordable price, although in a few cases, you might be disappointed, which is why we only list casas that we recommend and include photos so you can learn about casas particulares and pick one to suit your needs!
