Project Description

Welcome to “Pearl of the South”

Cienfuegos is called “Pearl of the South” and also has another name “Paris in Cuba”.

It is the only city in Cuba that was founded by the French and this elegant seaside city makes you feel a little different with wider streets than other Cuban cities.

It is located on the southern coast of Cuba, about 250 km from Havana and one hour drive from Trinidad.

The historic center of the city is listed for a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2005  and this site has many attractions including Plaza Jose Marti, Teatro Terry, Castillo de Jagua, Jardín Botánico, Cathedral of Cienfuegos and more.

There are two main areas to explore: Pueblo Nuevo, the colonnaded city centre and Punta Gorda, a peninsula with lots of 1950’s houses.

How to get to Cienfuegos

Cienfuegos is located on the southern coast of Cuba. Many tourists stop by Cienfuegos on the way to go to or back from Trinidad.

  • 2 hours and 40 minutes/233km from Havana
  • 1 hours and 25 minutes/83 km from Trinidad
  • 2 hours and 30 minutes/185km from Varadero

By bus:  From Havana, it takes about 6 and a half hours by bus and costs approximately $25 USD/CUC.

Make sure to book your bus ticket at least a day in advance, the buses frequently sell out a day in advance. You can book your tickets here, but prices are cheaper at the bus stations.

The two daily Viazul buses between Havana and Trinidad stop at Cienfuegos, as does the daily bus between Varadero, Santa Clara, and Trinidad. :

  • Havana to Cienfuegos: ($25 USD/CUC) –5 hour & 30 min
  • Trinidad to Cienfuegos: ($6 USD/CUC) – 1 hour & 35 min

If you take a taxi from Havana, it costs approximately $160USD/CUC. Also you can order a taxi in advance (online) from Trinidad which takes 1 hour and costs $40 CUC. For more information, click here.

Renting a car is another option. Booking a car rental in Cuba is not easy, so make sure to book a car several weeks, if not months, in advance online.
