Playa Girón and Playa Larga (Zapata National Park)
150km away from Havana, you will be surprised to see how water could be this beautiful! Playa Girón and Playa Larga are located in southern coast of Island. It is a part of the municipality of Cienaga de Zapata (Zapata Swamp), in province of Matanzas, which is the largest wetland in the world.
Zapata National Park was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2001. It has over 900 autochthonous plant species, 175 species of birds, 31 species of reptiles, and 1000 species of invertebrates. Zapata Peninsula is one of the best place for bird watching in Cuba, 280-350 species of birds are reported.
How to get to Playa Girón and Playa Larga
Playa Giron/Larga are located on the southern coast of Cuba, within 2 hours and half drive from Havana.
- 2 hours and 30 minutes/210km from Havana
- 2 hours and 30 minutes/160km from Trinidad
- 2 hours and 30 minutes/160km from Varadero
By bus: From Havana, it takes about 3 hours by bus and costs approximately $13 USD/CUC.
Víazul (www.viazul.com) has one daily bus from Havana to Playa Girón and one bus to be back to Havana.
Make sure to book your bus ticket at least a day in advance, the buses frequently sell out a day in advance. You can book your tickets here, but prices are cheaper at the bus stations.
